Introduction

Hello, please meet Bridget. "Brigitte Bardot" :-)

Bridget of Zadraha is a Hungarian short-haired pointer, and she was born on 7th February 2004. Her mother is called Ácsi Szecsköréti and her father is Ciro Vlčí hráz. We bought her from the Svarc family of Celakovice on Friday, 2nd of April 2004, and Bridget has been a full member of the family ever since.

I had a very clear reson for choosing this particular dog. After the first encounter with a Hungarian pointer, I fell in love with this breed so much to make it obvious that a Hungarian pointer had to become a family member. They are beautiful, intelligent, they learn quickly and understand a lot (a bit too much, perhaps), calm and good with children, sociable, elegant, active (be warned, it is almost impossible to get them tired) and they love their owners (as well as lots of other people).

The pointer in the role of the "hunter"

When we got the Hungarian pointer I had yet to properly see what awaited us. In order for her to show the breeding and in particular to strengthen the natural talents of a pointer, we began with hunting exercises. Bridget was one year old and just right for fetching, standing and following orders. We visited training camps, went on training weekends and provided individual training. Not only has the dog learned a lot but so have I. In May 2005 we passed a talent test and in September 2006 an autumnal pointer test. We trained her faithfully, frequently, in all weathers, over various terrains, firstly we pulled dummies and then game along short, long, flat, winding and "dangerous" trails so that Bridget knew that she can always count on her nose. That carrying pheasants and hares was no joke in the beginning can be verified by most of our hunting friends (two and four-legged). Now Bridget is every inch a hunting dog with good reliable results and a willingness to work. But nothing is truer than the fact that Bridget the hunting dog is a pet. The best pet in the world. Hunter or no hunter ... caressing, pampering, licking, ... these are her favorites :-)

The pointer and its position in the "pack"

Immediately after the first day Bridget was treated so that she would not be the head of the family. This meant no bed (not even for the first night … even though outside the home a she can visit a strange bed) and this goes for pampering too. It is basically a domestic dog so it fits in with a domestic pack perfectly and sometimes even has the "main word". Nevertheless a pointer is adaptable but also slightly dependant on its master. Is it a hunting dog which runs away? No. Even if it does it is back in a few minutes. She’ll not move without her master :-)
